Hekki ALLMO. A game that makes me feel as if I am standing at the edge of a deep, clear pool, watching the descent of a small pebble finding its way to the bottom. A gorgeous soundtrack. An intimate look at isolation. My first piece of placeholder text for this entry was “1000xRESIST is a sick-ass game”, something written spur-of-the-moment. I don’t think it conveys even near the entirety of how I feel about this story.
Something I think about a lot is how the medium of a game has a texture and modality that nothing else has. In a game, you are a participant in a way that you cannot be with a book, film, or even theatre production (though I feel that games and theatre may have the closest bridge between each other). This brings a specific weight to the story of a game, especially one that I lovingly describe as being for “narrative sickos”. 1KXR sits in a space akin to Kentucky Route Zero, for me. It is a game that I am in the moment of for the entire time. I want to sit in its moss and dig my fingers down, feeling the cool and damp earth underneath.
It is a game that is also so precisely aware of the fact that you the player are an observer as much as you are an actor. You are pushed into and pulled out of intimate, personal contexts again and again at varying levels of distance – you/You are there to be a witness; how will you judge what you are shown?
“We are not meant to remember everything”, states one of the final scenes. Eventually, some things fall out of view, whether we let them or no.
I love this game dearly.
